The College

Established in 2002, Medical Trust College of Nursing is one of the leading nursing education institutions in Kerala. The college is accredited by Indian Nursing Council, Kerala Nurses and Midwives council and affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences, Thrissur. 110 students are admitted to different courses each year. Students will have the opportunity to get hands on experience in super specialty nursing like Cardiac surgery, Cardiology etc. Many students have placed in pioneer health institutions and many of them are regarded as one among the best in the nursing profession because of their clinical acumen they have received from here.

Medical Trust College of Nursing has progressively grown in strength and scope over the years. It has highly qualified faculty, excellent infrastructure and hospitals, which provide a wholesome experience in nursing education.

It is with a strong commitment to the quest for excellence in the field of education, the MTCON was established and is making rapid progress in enhancing its potential and changing its outlook towards providing better resources required to impart best quality education. The vision, support and guidance of the management continues to be a great source of inspiration for all our endeavors.

There are challenges ahead of us, however, as I often say, ‘together we can truly make a great difference.’ Keeping this in mind, the MTCON family continues to remain committed to achieve our vision and I am certain with the blessings of almighty and with the support of the management, staff, parents and students, the college will reach greater heights in the years to come.

Physical facilities

Classrooms

The College of Nursing has well ventilated classrooms with comfortable seating arrangements. Each classroom is equipped with green board, white board, flannel board and OHP. LCD projector and public address system is also provided.

Each departments at the college of nursing has separate and well equipped laboratories.

Laboratories are equipped with mannequins, simulators, advanced birth systems, models, specimens, computers, articles for procedure demonstration and other audio visual aids. Laboratories are utilized for demonstrations and student practice of procedures under supervision.

Library

The library of Medical Trust College of Nursing is a storehouse of knowledge. Stocking more than 3500 books of current medical and nursing titles and subscribes to periodicals and journals. The library widens its services through internet facilities. The students are rendered guidance by the qualified librarians.

Clinical Facilities

Medical Trust Hospital, Cochin – the trusted name in health care, the first hospital in the state organize multi super specialty services under single roof, is one of the leading tertiary care referral hospitals in the entire South India. Established in the year 1972, Medical Trust has achieved a unique position among the major hospitals in the country pioneering many a new trends and rendering the best of medical services.

Community Health Nursing

The college offers field experience for the students in the community through postings at rural and urban areas of Ernakulam district.

Anti-Ragging policy

Ragging is an offence and is completely prohibited at our campus. We adhere to anti ragging policy and are committed to create a ragging free educational space for our students.

Preventive measures against ragging according to the Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1998, ragging means doing of any act by disorderly conduct to a student of an educational institution, which causes or is likely to cause physical or psychological harm or raising apprehension or shame or embracement to that student and includes teasing or abusing or playing practical jokes or causing hurt to such students or asking a student to do any act or to perform something which such student will not in the ordinary course be willing to do.

All institutions will have to abide by the directive of the Honorable Supreme Court of India, dated May 16th 2007 in SLP No. (S) 24295 of 2006 University of Kerala Vs Council, Principals colleges, Kerala and Ors (With SLP © No. 24296-99/2004 and W.P(Crl) No . 173/2006 and SLP© No. 14356/2005) and the recommendations approved by the Honorable Supreme Court of India on effective prevention of ragging in educational institutions.

In case, the applicant for admission is found to have indulged in ragging in the past or if it is notified later that she/he has indulged in ragging, admission may be refused or he/she shall be expelled from the educational institution.

It shall be collective responsibility of the authority of the institution to see that effective steps for preventing ragging are taken. Anti-ragging committees and anti-ragging squads will have to be formed to take effective measures against ragging and they should adhere to the stipulations and effectively monitor and comply with the directives.

Each of the student of the institutions and his / her parents or guardian are required to submit a combined undertaking at the time of registration/admission in prescribed format and is mandatory for registration/admission.

Preventive Activities

  • Undertaking from each student and his or her parents or guardian at the time of admission.
  • Application accompanying certificate denoting the behavioral pattern of the applicant.
  • Placing posters giving adequate publicity on prohibiting ragging and negative aspects of ragging.
  • Instructs fresh candidates on whom she or he can approach for help for various purposes.
  • Familiarizing the freshers with the academic environment of the institution.
  • Organizing joint programs of freshers and seniors.
  • Encourage freshers to report incidence of ragging either as victims or as witnesses.
  • Surprise inspections on hostel and other hot places by anti-ragging squad.
  • Investigate the incidence of ragging.
  • Keep mobile active at all times by anti-ragging squad.
  • Counseling and orientation for freshers.
  • Anonymous random surveys conducted across the first year batch of freshers during the first three months.
  • Organizing fresher’s day to encourage healthy interaction between freshers and seniors.

Association

SNA and College Student Union

The student nurses association is a nationwide organization that aims for reaping the best nurses by sowing the seeds right from the student period. It was established at Medical Trust College of nursing in 2002.

Activities of SNA and College Student Union

The SNA strives hard for the upliftment of the students through professional, educational, extracurricular activities.

General Body Meeting

We conduct general body meeting once in year where the students express their views and problems. The participant and winners of various competitions were congratulated.

The Executive Meeting

The board members met together and plan the activities under the guidance of president Prof. Anuji Mary Philip, Advisor Ms. Rekha Raju & Ms. Tiny Sebastian, and treasurer Ms. Suby Mary Eappen. The executive committee will meet regularly to plan and discuss about various activities.

PTA

The objectives are

  • To foster and promote good understanding and cooperation between teaching staff, students and guardians of the students of the college
  • To inculcate in the members a keen interest in working and progress of the college
  • To plan and execute such measures as will enable members to take an active and useful part in the development, improvement and welfare of the college
  • To induce all guardians effectively and actively cooperate with the college authorities in maintaining good discipline and high standards among the students
  • To define suitable ways and means with a view to prevent students unrest and to assist and cooperate with the college authorities in running the college smoothly during times of stress if any.
  • To take suitable action regarding and make representation to the Govt. and other concerned authorities on matters concerning the general progress of the college.
  • To institute scholarship, prizes etc. to encourage students in matters of studies and other healthy activities consist with the rules of the college.
  • To plan and execute any items of work that will be beneficial of advantages to the students and / or college
  • To convene meetings and conventions of students guardians and teachers.
  • For the purposes of carrying all or any of the objects of association, to receive or collect grants, donations, gifts etc. from members, nonmembers, government and other institutions

Committees

Anti-Ragging and Redressal Committee

The anti-ragging and redressal committee of the nursing college aims to develop a responsive and accountable attitude among all the stakeholders in order to maintain a harmonious educational atmosphere in the institute.

The objectives are

  • Upholding the dignity of the college by ensuring strife free atmosphere in the college by promoting cordial student – student relationship and student – teacher relationship
  • Encouraging the students to express their grievances / problems freely and frankly, without any fear of being victimized
  • To improve the Academic and administration in the college a Suggestion / complaint box is installed in the basement floor in which the student who wants to remain anonymous, put in writing their grievances and suggestions
  • Advice students of the college to respect the right and dignity of one another and show utmost restraint and patience whenever any occasion of rift arises
  • Advancing all the students to refrain from inciting students against other students, teachers and college administration
  • Advising all staffs to be affectionate to the students and not behave in a vindictive manner towards any of them for any reason
  • Ragging in any form is strictly prohibited in and outside the institution. Any violation of ragging and disciplinary rules should be urgently brought to the notice of principal

SNA

The objectives are

  • To provide opportunities for personal, professional, intellectual and social growth of students
  • To incorporate health information and service that are provided to the campus and community
  • To develop leadership skills of students
  • To promote awareness and involvement in nursing
  • To act as a liaison between nursing faculty and nursing students

College Student Union

The objectives are

  • To train the students of the college in the duties, responsibilities and rights of citizenship
  • To promote opportunities for the development of character, leadership, efficiency, knowledge and spirit of service among students
  • To encourage sports, arts and other extracurricular activities
  • To organize medical camps, educational exhibitions, debates, seminars, touring, parties and such other activities
  • To identify students with learning difficulties and give support and guidance
  • To make students professionally trained
  • To create personal and professional standards among students
  • To promote creativity and artistic talents of the students of the college

Curriculum Committee

Curriculum committee includes principal, Vice principal and all coordinators of the UG and PG courses. It meets every 3 months in an academic year. It evaluates the ongoing academic (theory and practical) programs of various courses.

The objective of this is to identify

  • Progress of curriculum administration
  • Progress of students both theory and practical
  • Identify weak students
  • Plan remedial measures for the weak students
  • Identify and take measures for absenteeism of students
  • Plan the master and clinical rotation of students
  • Schedule the teacher guided crash training for the students registered for exam

Editorial Committee

The editorial committee of Medical Trust College of Nursing was established in September 2012. Committee is headed by Principal, staff editor, student editor and selected representatives from students and staff and conducts meeting bimonthly.

Functions of the committee are as follows:

  • The committee enjoys wide freedom of choice of editorial topics and advertisements.
  • To scrutinize the talents of students to be included in college magazine.
  • Conducts periodical meetings to discuss particular requirements or problems with regard to articles and publications materials.
  • Committee members will take the responsibility to publish the activities of SNA and College union within and outside campus.

Disciplinary Committee

Students are required to be thoroughly familiar with college regulations as stated in the prospectus and university web site. The entrance and continued presence of a student at Medical Trust College of Nursing, Irumpanam shall be considered as signifying his or her willingness and expressed consent to abide by these rules and regulations. Students are also responsible for all official college notices published throughout the academic year

The primary objective of the disciplinary Committee is to address and effectively solve various student related matters. Disciplinary committee is a bridge between students and authorities. The committee has to maintain a balance between student’s demands/problems and feasibility of solution provided by authorities.

Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment and self-discipline is one of the key ingredients of success in life. So we try to imbibe the feeling of accountability into the students by showcasing that they are responsible in all ways for upholding the reputation of the Institute through their actions.

Staff Development Committee

Nursing education is developing fast day by day. Educators need to be in touch with newer developments in nursing education and research. In medical Trust College of Nursing, faculty members are attending workshops and continuing nursing education programs. We are conducting staff development programme one each per department every year. In addition, our Post Graduate & undergraduate students conduct State Level Workshop with the support of faculty of college of Nursing. The faculty is also called as resource persons for outside educational sessions and provide echo sessions on the topics they have attended outside.

Student Support and Guidance

The student support and guidance program integrates students and instructional services to promote institutional responsibility and accountability for student success. The SSGP provides service such as orientation, Assessment, Counselling, Academic Advising and early intervention. It also supports student equity in assessment, student services and access to college resource and provides a foundation for students to achieve their educational goals

College organizes 2 workshops per year. It is mainly conducted with eminent speakers as resource persons from well-known institutions.
